Brundibár, A Children’s Opera: Exploring the Holocaust through Music*

During WWII, Theresienstadt, a concentration camp in what is now the Czech Republic functioned as a “model ghetto” for the Nazis. Although highly censored, the arts were allowed to flourish. A children’s opera, Brundibár by Hans Krása, was performed 55 times under oppressive conditions. In this class, we will discuss the performances, plot, and music of Brundibárin Theresienstadt. Suitable only for ages 12 and up.
