Deep Into the River by Andy LeGrand is a program work for guitar and flute.
The first movement: The guitar represents a person boating on a river. The flute represents a butterfly. The two meet just as the boater begins to paddle away from the riverbank. As the boater reaches the river’s calm downstream current, the interactions between the two entities increase and evolve into a calming and dance-like conversation.
The second movement: As the downstream journey continues, the boater meets rapids. The butterfly acts alarmed as the boater navigates through the rapids, but things calm as the pair move into a still, peaceful pool. The rapids return, but the navigation is more solid, and the pair completes the journey with an energetic finish.
